Landscape Painting in Gouache with Justin Donaldson
WHEN | August 28-31 : 9am-5pm Eastern Time daily
Justin Donaldson joins East Oaks Studio for a boutique workshop exploring plein air landscape painting in gouache. This workshop is limited to eight in-person attendees who will receive an exceptional amount of one-on-one instruction. Over four days, we will build an approach to plein air painting and an understanding of gouache, learning how gouache shifts in value and saturation, and develop strategies to predict these shifts in order to master the medium. We will work on abstracting the complexity of painting natural scenes in order to find clarity, and will focus on strategies to effectively paint an accurate impression in a changing environment.
Day 1: Introduction to gouache and its importance in the lives of many plein air painters.
Day 2: Abstraction and finding clarity amidst confusion.
Day 3: Practical strategies for working quickly and accurately.
Day 4: Working on advanced layering, balancing, and finishing projects.
Morning sessions will be spent painting plein air and will be a combination of demonstrations and practical application. These sessions will be livestreamed for our virtual audience.
Afternoon sessions will be spent applying the lessons from the morning demonstration, with one-on-one instruction from Justin.
Note: this schedule may shift according to the weather. In the event of inclement weather, we will work in-studio. Working around weather conditions is an essential part of plein air painting—we appreciate your flexibility and understanding!
This workshop will take place at East Oaks Studio in Cary, NC, and in surrounding parks. The exact address and directions will be provided after registration. Transportation to and from the painting locations will be provided.
If traveling from out of town, there is a wide array of accommodation options in the area. We will offer our recommendations!
A materials list will also be provided.
Cancellation Policy: We understand that plans change! A refund of $850 is available until July 7th. A full refund is unavailable as we need to account for payment processing fees.
If you need to cancel after this point, you are responsible for the full cost of the workshop, unless the space is able to be filled in which case we will offer a refund of $850. We will happily work with you on filling the space, if the situation arises. Thank you for your understanding.
